Van Gogh’s Peasants

I wonder why people miss that many of the French “peasants” van Gogh painted were melanated people. It’s never discussed at all. Go to France now. 4% of the entire population is melanated people. What happened between 1885 and today?

Also in looking at some of van Gogh’s other works featuring ‘peasants’ with melanated features, they look like they have been altered and the skin lightened. Now to be sure in this day these people would not have looked ‘African’ black. They did not live in Africa but Western Europe, but something is going on.
