With You, I Taste the Sunset

This is a poem I wrote when I was probably around 18. I wish I would have dated it, but at least I had the foresight to laminate it in photo album pages so that I still have it today. I did some slight editing to the ending just to give it more punch.

Life has meaning now.
With you, I taste the sunset.
And the first words out of your mouth
As you pointed were: “That’s you!”
And I knew what you meant.
And I tasted it.
Relished every second.
Every flavor of the shifting shades—
Every image of the setting Sun.

I am so alive.
With you, I smell the rain.
And quiver with excitement
When I hear of its approach.
I enjoy beauty.
And you are beauty.
You’re the reason
My smile never fades.

Watch me as I dance.
With you, I hear the music.
Sweet melodies strike chords
Deep within my soul.
As it sings.
I am singing.
I never cease the laughter.
My muscles may relax
But still it lingers on.
The joy is palpable.

With you, I taste the sunset.
