A man in debt cut off his ear.

In debt, so no one wants him near.

I wrote this poem to put right here.

To entertain my friends, so dear.

If you have cause to run away

Then, tell me what the beast did say.

I have to plan on rainy days

Or else I’ll perish in my ways.

Over here! Psst! Round the bend

In three lines our story ends

And you’ll be sated only then

As if you had, instead, read ten.

  1. thought provoking.. at first I thought maybe it was about student debt or an allusion to van gogh or something.. but now I’m thinking it’s ‘merely’ what is purports to be: a poem about the telling of the poem that describes the relationship, indeed ‘debt,’ between the poet and the audience. Good stuff, keep writing. Compare ‘Rodeo Aesthetique’ by Donald Revell. I wonder if you might like his work.

    1. It is an allusion to van Gogh but Vincent’s debt wasn’t monetary. I will check him out.
