A Poem Dedicated to Mothers

Poster of an original oil painting Climbing Mother by contemporary figurative artist Brian Kershisnik. A mother in a black dress holds her baby tight while another climbs a ladder leaned against her back against a blue and green tiled backdrop with angel in each top corner.

My girlfriend’s a volcano—
Pele is her name.
But, man, she’s a creator
If you play that game.
And that’s what you came to do:
A child dropped into this sandbox,
To remember you can build castles to sky.
The Mother is your toy box.

When I penned this last line I pictured a child climbing all over a mother and her acting wholly unaffected by it. Do you see it? A child using a mother as a jungle gym and her with her nose stuck in a book?
